Quick Update…

An exciting milestone: I saw her kick on the outside of my belly on Wednesday night for the first time.  I was sitting in my last night of my entrepreneurship class and listening to my classmates’ presentations of their final projects when she decided to wake up and be really active.  I looked down and my belly just jumped up.  It surprised me at first, then I could feel her moving all around with my hands.  Pretty much this night ended up with me giggling to myself in the corner of my classroom, poking myself in the belly.

After a very long and exhausting weekend in Reno/Tahoe for April’s wedding, I completely forgot that I had a check-up appointment with the midwife this morning.  Luckily I had accidentally left on reminder emails on my gmail calendar, so I received a reminder email and was able to make it within 15 minutes of when I was supposed to be there.

The midwife says the little one is growing right on schedule.  I believe “perfect” was the term she used when describing her size and position.  (::grin::)  She said her heartrate sounds great and there were no comments on my weight gain this time, so as long as the midwife is happy, I’m happy with it.

Next time (end of August) we get to do a glucose and iron test to see if I’m developing gestational diabetes or anemia.  Goody!  I’m not terribly worried, considering all my tests were great at the beginning of all of this, but we’ll see.  I won’t get too optimistic.

It feels really great to be done with school for this semester.  I think I was really beginning to run out of steam, but managed to muster one last spurt of energy to finish my final assignments.  I’m hopeful for some decent grades this time around.  I’m sitting at a 3.0 from last semester so hopefully I can boost that with this round.  Also, I’m going to be taking two classes next semester, right in the middle of which our little girl is due.  I’m hoping we’re able to handle that commitment well.

I found out today that starting at the end of August, I will be getting contributions into an annuity for my retirement through work.  Yay for making it six months without the overwhelming urge to hurt someone.  Hopefully that six month review will come with a raise too…

Someday I will get around to setting up my computer at home and getting the scanner working to get those pictures uploaded.

Taking a breather…

Currently I’m taking a break from cleaning up the house.  John’s mom and her boyfriend are coming into town to stay with us for the night so I finally got off my butt and went out and picked up some things for the house.  Got a new set of towels, new fun things for the guest room, which I think I will make into a beach house/sea shell theme in orange and brown, and a couple of things for the bathroom.  I can’t wait to buy some frog-themed stuff to make that bathroom a little more fun.  I think Burlington is really my favorite place to shop, as long as they have the stuff I need.  Back to the grind!

My feelings on gender stereotypes

July 6th, 2009 by admin

Personally, I like the color pink.  I really do.  I think it’s “cute” and “fun”.  On the other hand, I don’t need to wear it everyday to reinforce the fact that I am, in fact, female.  I feel the same way about our baby girl.  We are decorating her nursery in a green jungle theme with lots of fun animals and colors.  I don’t feel like she needs a pink room to reinforce her gender understanding or her sexual preference later.  Therefore, I will be happy if we receive things for her, pink or otherwise, but I probably stick to more gender neutral themes for things we actually buy her.  For example, our stroller is this great plaid travel system from Eddie Bauer: http://www.burlingtoncoatfactory.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Section_Id=9560&pcount=&pn=1&Product_Id=969009&sku1=k_s1_78341584&is_baby_depot=1

Any way…just my two cents for now.

First Fourth in the House

July 5th, 2009 by admin

Well, yesterday marked the first Fourth of July we spent in our new house.   As it turns out, fireworks are completely legal to fire off within the city limits in Topeka.  Needless to say, the dogs and I spent the day indoors (as I am really not a fan of fireworks).  Even so, it turned out to be a lot better holiday than last year (long story…) so I was pretty happy.  In the afternoon, John and I went up to Lawrence to meet up with his mom and watch her boyfriend’s bike race.  Mark is an avid street bicycle racer so it was a fun new experience and it is always good to hang out with them.  Then, they came down to the house and we had dinner, comprised of grilled vegetables, summer corn salad (corn, black beans, tomatoes, and basil), fresh cut watermelon, grilled hot dogs and grilled peaches with vanilla bean ice cream for dessert.

Today, I’ve tried to be a little more productive.  Lately I’ve been working on John’s diaper bag but today I took a break to work on some curtains I’m making for the nursery.  I got through one before my back started aching pretty badly.  I will post pictures once I finish both the bag and the curtains.

Also, we think we’ve decided on a name we really like for her but I’m going to let it marinate for a while before we make any sort of announcements.  =)
