Why I will not buy your kid’s wrapping paper…

October 16th, 2010 by admin

It has been a while and sadly I make my return today mostly because of a gripe. I wonder why schools and organizations insist on forcing their students out to sell wrapping paper, popcorn, cookies, whatever… in order to raise money. Surely there are more effective ways to raise funds than this. I know that when I was in school I hardly ever actually sold anything from those catalogs…but I sure pined for the “prizes” at the end (which only a select few whose parents take the order sheet to work with them ever actually win). What are the lessons here that are so valuable to our children that this tradition of door-to-door humiliation and, in my humble opinion, waste of time, has continued on generation after generation? I understand that Girl Scout cookies are amazing, but wouldn’t the revenue model be much more productive if they simply sold to the grocery stores? I mean, I get that free labor (which is what forcing your kids out to sell in the streets and in front of the local WalMart really is) is the best kind for the bottom line. But why do parents continue to tolerate this fundraising model? There must be a better way. Needless to say, no, I would not like to buy some popcorn little Cub Scout.

The Ticker Tape Parade!

So, Sera and I had some fun with the paper shreds from John’s newest purchase (a paper shredder…duh).  I can’t believe how big she’s getting.  She’s climbing all over everything and standing up on her own (pulling up on the furniture).  She’s even made it a few seconds at a time holding onto nothing.

She also has two new teeth coming in ( on the top row), so she’s been nomming on everything in sight.

A New Addition…Introducing ZELDA!

July 30th, 2010 by admin

Last weekend we discovered two very sweet pups wandering around the gas station on the corner from our house.  We took them home and gave them food and water, but we had other plans for the day and had to leave them in the backyard until we returned.  When we got back, they had dug out from the backyard and were gone.  They were so sweet that we had decided to keep them, so I had posted a notice that they were missing.  We got an email yesterday stating that the pups had been found and were at the humane society.  Yesterday, we went and adopted the girl and she’s coming home today after her spay.

It Stands!!

So lately life has been a little busy. But I am excited to say that I am almost done with my summer semester and ready to take advantage of some well-earned rest.

In the world of Sera, she has figured out, over the last week or so, that she can now pull herself up onto furniture, the side of her crib, and her playpen. So, last week, John lowered her crib to keep her from pulling herself out and she now gets to explore what exists beyond the floor.

She’s also eating a ton of new foods. We have started preparing her foods instead of buying the jarred baby foods since she doesn’t seem to like them much. Her favorite food is mashed bananas. She’s discovered that she really likes crackers and enjoys both graham crackers and Ritz (though she doesn’t get many of those since they’re so salty). She also still loves Cheerios and shredded cheese.

The next challenge is figuring out weening off the bottle.

Look at those TEETH!

Look at those shiny white teeth! This is really the first shot we’ve gotten so far with her mouth open enough to see her little chompers. She’s growing up so fast!

Ladies and Gentlemen: We have a crawler!

Sera is officially mobile. While not the most graceful, she is getting around via the army crawl or scoot.

A Happy Anniversary Indeed!

May 24th, 2010 by admin

This weekend was our one year anniversary! First, John, Sera, and I went to have our pictures taken to have our first real set of family photos. Then, John took me to Kansas City for dinner at Fogo de Chao, a Brazilian steakhouse.

Dinner was amazing. Fogo de Chao is a really great dining experience. They have a fancy salad bar, with imported meats and cheeses, a variety of cold salads, olives, etc. Then, when you are ready for your main course, you turn your table marker to green and the wandering butchers come to your table with a variety of differently seasoned and cooked meats for you to try. They have parmesan crusted pork tenderloin, filet mignon, several different preparations of beef sirloin, chicken, and more. You can have as much of as many different types of meat as you want and you get unlimited servings of their awesome cheese bread, mashed potatoes, carmelized plantains, and fried crispy polenta. We also had a very tasty molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream to finish things off. It was overall an EXCELLENT experience. I have nothing but rave reviews for this establishment because the food was amazing and the service was OUTSTANDING! A nice change from the mediocrity of customer service I’ve experienced in recent years. Truly amazing. If you have a location near you, you should definitely check it out for a nice meal.  It’s a bit pricey, so I was shocked to see as many kids in the place as there were, but it is a family-friendly atmosphere so, as John said, if you have the money you may as well not punish yourself with fast food.

Overall, it was a very wonderful first anniversary. I will post pictures from our dinner later this evening.

Oh, and I plan on making these soon, after tasting them at the restaurant:
Thank you Elise!

Why Aren’t You Sleeping Yet? Tips to Get Baby to Bed

May 14th, 2010 by admin

I have run into so many people lately who have told me about their troubles with getting their baby to sleep. These people are not parents of newborns. These are parents of babies who are seven months or older! I can’t imagine being sane after seven months of waking up every two hours each night. Right now, Sera is sleeping (more often than not) through the night. In fact, this week alone she has slept completely through the night at least three days in a row. Otherwise, she will usually wake up once for a bottle or snuggle, then go right back to sleep.

Disclaimer: I am obviously no expert, I am just sharing what we’ve learned works with our daughter so far.

These are a few tips from our house to yours on getting your baby (and yourselves!) a better night’s sleep:

1) First and foremost, advice from the experts: I was amazed when I read an article in Parents magazine (February 2010) about getting baby better sleep. One of the fundamental points that stood out to me was the issue of bedtime. Apparently, setting your child’s bedtime between 5:30PM and 6:30PM gets them on the right track to assume the natural sleep pattern they crave and puts them in alignment with their natural circadian rhythm. According to the article, babies are naturally ready for sleep during this period and if you miss this window, baby’s body tends to ramp itself up to overcome her natural fatigue, making her more wired and difficult to put to bed than otherwise. It may seem counterintuitive, but keeping baby up until 10PM so she will sleep longer actually will make her sleep less restful and will result in more frequent and earlier wake up times. So, keep to an early bedtime schedule to start things off right.

2) The most important thing you can do to start good sleep habits is to form a routine. What kind of routine will work best? Well, as I continue to find to be true when it comes to parenting: do what works best for you and your family.

We have found that the two necessities in our routine are dark and quiet. Beyond that, we can do just about anything and she will wind down for sleep on time. I made some curtains for her room, which I lined with black felt to keep the extra light out from outside. (Canvas may be an even better choice.) White noise helps soothe babies by reminding them of the womb. (It has also been shown to potentially decrease the chances of death by SIDS!) So, we also added a box fan on her floor near the door (facing away from her crib).

She doesn’t take baths everyday yet, so when we do give her a bath, we just start a bit earlier. We usually try to read her a book right before bedtime also. Generally, the mainstays of our bedtime routine are: turn on our glowing lullaby seahorse, close the curtains, change her diaper & clothes, wrap her loosely in one of her blankets (she tends to flail while she’s eating otherwise) and give her a bottle. I usually rock her while she’s eating, but John doesn’t, so it doesn’t seem to matter. We sit in the dark while she eats and she is usually calm enough by the time she’s done eating to be burped and put in her bed. Most of the time she isn’t asleep when she gets put down, which is great because it teaches her to fall asleep on her own.

3) What does “sleeping through the night (STTN)” really mean? Some experts say you should expect about 6 hours straight from your baby. I think that’s nonsense. Sera sleeps from when I put her down for bed at 6PM to approximately 8AM. This was a huge improvement over waking up every 2-3 hours, which occurred once we started her on this sleep schedule.

4) What about naps? When she’s at home with me, she takes 2-3 naps per day. Each nap can be between approximately 45 minutes to 2 hours long. Generally, she naps at about 9:30AM or 10AM and again at about 1PM. Depending on how long those naps are and how sleepy she is, she may nap again at about 4PM. Either way, she is ready for bed by 6PM.

5) What about feeding? We generally feed her on an as-needed basis. In other words, when she’s hungry, we feed her. However, around bedtime, we always try to make sure that we get her last bottle in right at bedtime to send her to sleep with a full belly. Don’t forget to burp or she may wake up from spit up or gas!

Hope this all helps and I’d love feedback and other suggestions!

The Best First Mother’s Day Ever!

May 10th, 2010 by admin

Hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day yesterday. I know I did! The day started off with an awesome brunch that John made from scratch: bacon & cheese frittata, sweet cream biscuits and mango avocado salad.

Next, we went to see “How to Train Your Dragon” in 3-D. Sera sat through her first movie in the theater and we had a great time.

Here’s Sera trying on her 3-D glasses:

Then, we came home and John made an awesome dinner of Cheesy Fondue Mac & Cheese, followed by yummy Ghirardelli brownies!

I have the best family! =)
